Introducing APWC's August 2015 Rock Star Volunteer, Lily Ung!
Written by Camille Chuaquico

LILY UNG

Some people are born rock stars. We are so grateful that one of them is part of our team! Meet Lily Ung, APWC’s August 2015 Rock Star Volunteer.

To say that she’s a passionate volunteer is an understatement. This year marks her 8th year doing volunteer work for nonprofits. Being a children’s activities volunteer at our shelter, she gives her all to provide a fun learning environment for our children & youth survivors. She keeps them engaged by implementing activities such as making arts and crafts, playing games, and watching movies.

Lily’s impressive creativity and artistic ability extends beyond the children’s activities that she coordinates for APWC! When she’s not volunteering for APWC, she loves writing stories and documenting her life through journaling, scrapbooking, and vlogging.

When asked why she wanted to volunteer at APWC, she shares:

“All I knew then was that I wanted to help. Someone. Something. Somewhere. I wanted to contribute any way I can. Domestic violence, especially in the Asian Pacific community, is something that rarely gets talked about due to fear of being threatened and judged. The lack of resources and support is a huge problem when it comes to abuse. That is when I knew I wanted to contribute.”

We are truly honored that Lily Ung has chosen to volunteer with us. She is definitely a certified rock star! Click here to find out how you, too, can become a rock star volunteer at APWC.

APWC Goes to the Aquarium of the Pacific
Written by Camille Chuaquico

We’re so grateful to our friends at the Aquarium of the Pacific for providing complimentary tickets for our shelter clients to see their aquarium in Long Beach, California. Our clients, their kids and our staff had such an amazing time exploring the aquarium, discovering aquatic animals, and learning about marine conservation.

Summer is the perfect time to go enjoy the outdoors, take the kids for a field trip, and learn outside the four walls of the classroom. APWC makes every effort to provide our clients with fun learning environment where they can enrich their knowledge in a particular subject area and expand their awareness of their own community.

Thank you for your generous support, Aquarium of the Pacific!

APWC Receives Community Benefit Grant from Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center
Written by Verena Kwan

APWC is honored to be selected as a 2015 Community Benefit grant recipient by the Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center (KP BPMC). We were awarded $7,500 to support our Community Education and Empowerment Program.

Our partnership with KP BPMC will help us increase awareness of our services to vulnerable domestic violence survivors, while also allowing us to provide no-cost mental health services to more survivors. We are excited to create more partnerships within the community to decrease the stigma on receiving mental health services. With this partnership, we will also be able to decrease some of the barriers preventing survivors from seeking help, such as lack of transportation or child care.

APWC staff and members of other grantee organizations were invited to a Community Benefit Partner Reception in June, which provided the opportunity for grantee organizations to network with other community leaders and to learn more about KP BPMC’s work in the community.

Thank you, KP BPMC, for your support of the community and of APWC!

Meet APWC's July 2015 Rock Star Volunteer, Yuna Choi!
Written by Camille Chuaquico

yuna 1

Yuna has been an amazing children's activities volunteer and the kids lover her! When she's not at the shelter being a guardian angel to the little ones, you can find Yuna somewhere in Downtown Los Angeles, taking pictures of old historic buildings, street arts, museums, or somewhere you would normally see people taking selfies.

Yuna had a love-hate rleationship with her bass guitar and finally put an end to it when she decided that playing the ukulele is a better fit for her. And we must admit, the ukulele is way way cuter than a bass guitar!

When she was younger, she dreamt of becoming a chef, but the unvierse conspired to turn her into someone who aspires to do more. She has an undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering and is currently pursuing her masters in Clinical Psychology. We are very excited that she'll be joining the APWC family as a Marriage and Family Therapy Trainee soon!

Catch her at the shelter, rocking her crayons and markers, being a children's activities volunteer extraordinaire! Volunteering at APWC is an amazing experience. Come join the fun!
