General Statistics On Domestic Violence

  • In 2005:  1,181 women were murdered by an intimate partner. That is an average of 3 women per day.
  • Every 2 minutes in America, a woman is sexually assaulted.
  • Of all the women murdered in the U.S., about one-third were killed by an intimate partner.
  • Nearly 1/3 of American Women (31%) report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.
  • Approximately 73% of rape victims know their assailant.
  • Only 6% of rapist will ever spend a day in jail.
  • Findings have shown, up to 40% to 60% of API women experience IPV.
  • In households where children were present, women were at a much higher rate of experiencing domestic violence.
  • This translates to domestic violence occurring in 436,000 households per year where children are present, exposing nearly 916,000 children to violence in the home every year.
  • Nationwide, children from DV households are 3 to 5 times more likely to become perpetrators or victims of DV as adults.

In the Asian and Pacific Islander Population We Serve

  • - 1/3 of all API Americans live in California with a large concentration in Los Angeles.
  • - 41% to 60% of Asian women report experiencing physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime, according to the API Institute on Domestic Violence.
  • - APWC is 1 of only 3 domestic violence shelters in LA county with multi-lingual and multi-cultural supportive capacity for API clients.
